I’m not 100%, but I believe in the original piece they clarify that her teammates are allowed to assist her around the bases. The umpire was incorrect, which would have made this story less appealing and it would never had made national news. I think that qualifies as “ironic.” I just wanted to use some “air” quotes. Now that I have had time to reflect on this comment, I think maybe I’m incorrect. It doesn’t qualify as “ironic,” and the umpire was wrong in a different feel good piece. Instead of editing for correctness, I thought I would babble on about nonsense.
